Joel Chua Welcomes Cooperation with New Lawmakers
Manila’s 3rd district Representative and chairman of the House Committee on Good Government and Public Accountability, Joel Chua, expressed openness to collaborating with incoming lawmakers from Akbayan and Mamamayang Liberal (ML) Party-lists in his committee. He specifically mentioned looking forward to working with Akbayan representatives Chel Diokno, Perci Cendaña, and Dadah Kiram Ismula, as well as ML Party-list representative Leila de Lima.
Chua emphasized the value these new members bring, acknowledging that “they are highly qualified to help in promoting good governance, transparency, and accountability.” This willingness to cooperate reflects his commitment to strengthening oversight and ensuring effective governance in the next congressional term.
Political Diversity and Committee Leadership
The representative also shared his perspective on Filipino politics, stating it is not simply divided into black and white but features many different shades. He described Congress as “a tapestry of many threads that the Filipino people weave whenever we have elections.” He added, “It is now up to all of us in Congress to discern what the voters ultimately mandated all of us to do and how best to serve those mandates.”
As the 20th Congress approaches, it remains uncertain if Chua will keep his chairmanship of the Good Government and Public Accountability Committee. His panel played a significant role in last year’s impeachment proceedings against Vice President Sara Duterte, with multiple hearings focusing on her alleged misuse of confidential funds.
Chua’s openness to collaboration with incoming party-list lawmakers signals a potential for more unified efforts in holding public officials accountable and promoting transparency in government operations.
