Empowering Filipinas Through Digital Literacy
TAGUIG, PHILIPPINES — The Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC), alongside several non-government organizations, recently launched a new initiative aimed at enhancing digital literacy among Filipina women. The program’s goal is to equip women with essential digital skills to thrive in today’s connected world.
On March 19, more than 100 participants from diverse organizations gathered at the National Cybercrime Hub to join the launch of the Juana Tech program. This initiative focuses on providing accessible digital literacy education specifically designed for Filipinas.
Collaborative Efforts from Multiple Sectors
The event featured collaboration from Scam Watch Pilipinas, Women in Security Alliance Philippines (WiSAP), and the Journalism Studies Association of the Philippines, Inc. (JSAP). Representatives also came from the Philippine National Police (PNP), National Authority on Child Care (NACC), Citizen Crime Watch, STI College-Bonifacio Global City, and Converge ICT.
WiSAP’s president highlighted that the program will cover a wide range of topics, including website development, content creation, and online safety. Meanwhile, the head of JSAP pointed out the particular benefits for women educators, many of whom lack access to digital training opportunities.
Understanding Digital Literacy and Its Importance
According to UNESCO, digital literacy involves the confident and critical use of various digital technologies for communication, information retrieval, and problem-solving across all areas of life. This understanding frames the program’s objectives to empower women to navigate the digital world safely and effectively.
During the launch, several speakers shared valuable insights. One investigator from the Women and Children Section of CICC presented a gender-focused analysis of cybercrime statistics, shedding light on the unique challenges women face online.
A Citizen Crime Watch ambassador encouraged women to adopt a “Kontra Scam” mindset to protect themselves against online fraud. Additionally, the CEO of Astria Philippines discussed the serious effects of cyberbullying, while a communications leader from Converge ICT addressed the digital divide and how Filipina professionals can take leadership roles in the digital era.
Expanding Reach and Future Plans for Juana Tech
The Juana Tech initiative aims to extend its digital literacy campaign to include business owners, academic professionals, and local government units. This wider inclusion will help build a stronger foundation for digital skills across various sectors.
By fostering these skills, the program hopes to empower Filipina women to not only participate in but also lead within the digital landscape.
