Judicial and Bar Council Begins Supreme Court Interviews
The Judicial and Bar Council has started the selection process by conducting the first round of interviews for the position of Supreme Court associate justice. This move comes as the council prepares for the upcoming vacancy caused by the compulsory retirement of Associate Justice Mario Lopez on June 4, 2025.
The Judicial and Bar Council interviewed several candidates, including Court of Appeals justices Nina Antonio-Valenzuela and Ramon Bato Jr., along with University of the Philippines College of Law Dean Darlene Marie Berberabe. These interviews are part of a thorough screening process to identify the most qualified individual for the Supreme Court post.
Role of the Secretary of Justice in the Judicial and Bar Council
Among the panel of interviewers was the Secretary of Justice, Jesus Crispin Remulla. The Judicial and Bar Council highlighted that, according to Article VIII, Section 8(1) of the 1987 Constitution, the Secretary of Justice serves as an ex officio member of the council. This means the Secretary actively participates in the evaluation and selection of candidates for the judiciary.
Upcoming Interview Schedule
Additional interviews are scheduled on May 15, 16, and 21 to ensure a comprehensive review of all nominees. The Judicial and Bar Council is committed to a transparent and rigorous process as it moves toward filling the Supreme Court vacancy. The council’s work ensures that only highly qualified candidates are considered for one of the highest judicial positions in the country.
