Justice Undersecretary Emphasizes Fair Probe on Missing Sabungeros
MANILA, Philippines – The Department of Justice (DOJ) has assured the public that the ongoing investigation into the missing sabungeros (cockfight aficionados) case is not personality-driven and does not target any specific group. Justice Undersecretary Raul Vasquez made this clear during a press briefing in Quezon City on July 12, 2025.
“Wala kaming tinutumbok. Kung ano man ang kahihinatnan ng investigation at kung sino man ‘yong natutukoy na siya ang may kinalaman dyan, sila ang dapat managot,” Vasquez said. He stressed that the probe focuses solely on uncovering evidence and holding accountable those involved, regardless of identity.
“It’s not personality-driven. There is nothing personal about it. It’s more on trabaho lang ito. At ang hinahabol natin ay ‘yong ebidensya,” he added, underscoring that the investigation remains professional and impartial.
Collating Evidence to Strengthen Cases
Vasquez revealed that investigators are currently gathering and reviewing evidence to build solid cases related to the disappearance of the 34 missing sabungeros. “We are on the collation stage of these pieces of evidence, and we are in the process now of trying to strengthen the case or cases that may be filed,” he explained.
President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. previously ordered a thorough investigation to uncover the truth behind the alleged abduction and murder of the victims and to ensure justice is served.
Palace Press Officer Claire Castro expressed the government’s expectation for a fair and impartial probe, despite the involvement of high-profile personalities.
Allegations and Whistleblower Claims
Among the suspects, Julie Patidongan, also known as Totoy, has implicated several police officers, a showbiz personality, and gaming tycoon Atong Ang in connection with the disappearance. The whistleblower further alleged that the victims’ bodies were dumped in Taal Lake in Batangas province.
Authorities continue to pursue leads, focusing on facts and evidence to resolve the case without bias or prejudice.
