K9 Handler Terminated After Service Dog Abuse Incident
MANILA, Philippines — The K9 handler involved in the viral video showing the abuse of a service dog within the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) premises has been terminated from service immediately. This decision came after the Search and Secure Canine Training and Services International Inc. (SAS K9) completed an internal investigation into the incident.
The service dog abuse case prompted SAS K9 to act swiftly, upgrading the handler’s status from suspension to termination due to gross negligence and violation of animal welfare protocols. Officials reported that the agency remains committed to upholding the highest standards of ethical K9 handling.
Agency Response and Apology
In a public statement, SAS K9 expressed deep regret over the incident, acknowledging the distress caused to the public and animal advocates. “This action is unacceptable, and we are taking this matter seriously,” the agency stated.
To prevent future occurrences, SAS K9 announced it will implement additional retraining programs for its canine handler teams and review its internal training processes. “This incident does not reflect our standards, and we are dedicated to ensuring it does not happen again,” they affirmed.
Legal Action and Community Involvement
The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) confirmed plans to file a case against the K9 handler. Coordination is ongoing with Meralco officials and the individual who uploaded the viral video, who personally witnessed the dog’s mistreatment. Community members noted the urgency of addressing such cases, especially following a similar recent case involving a severely malnourished working K9 named Kobe.
PAWS emphasized that these incidents highlight systemic issues where working animals, who serve loyally and courageously, are often treated as disposable tools rather than valued beings.
Meralco’s Stance on the Incident
Meralco’s Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications expressed the company’s deep disturbance over the abuse. He highlighted that the company’s values demand integrity and compassion, not just towards people but all living beings under their care. “What happened is not only unacceptable. It stands in direct contradiction to everything we believe in,” he said.
Witness Willing to Testify
The uploader of the video, Nicole Espiritu, has expressed her willingness to assist PAWS and testify in the case against the K9 handler. This cooperation further strengthens the effort to hold those responsible accountable for the service dog abuse case.
