Kanlaon Volcano Four Quakes Raise Alert Level
Four volcanic earthquakes shook Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island within the last 24 hours, sources said. The sudden rise from zero to four quakes signals increasing volcanic activity that residents and authorities are closely monitoring.
Kanlaon Volcano four quakes have heightened concerns as the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reports the volcano remains at Alert Level 3. This level indicates ongoing magmatic unrest beneath the surface.
Rising Sulfur Emissions and Volcano Inflation
Phivolcs also noted sulfur dioxide emissions reached 3,380 tons as of July 16, a significant amount showing increased volcanic gas release. The volcano’s edifice continues to swell, suggesting magma accumulation inside. However, cloud cover partly hides the plume, limiting visibility.
Safety Measures and Evacuation Advisory
Due to the Kanlaon Volcano four quakes and persistent unrest, officials strongly advise evacuating all residents within six kilometers of the summit. Authorities warn against flying aircraft near the volcano to avoid ash and gas hazards.
Residents are urged to prepare for possible dangers such as sudden explosions, lava flows, ashfall, rockfalls, lahars during heavy rains, and pyroclastic flows. These risks remain high as the volcano’s activity intensifies.
Humanitarian Aid and Affected Communities
The Department of Social Welfare and Development reports that the number of affected individuals has slightly increased from 94,228 to 94,737. To support these communities, the agency has already distributed over 195 million pesos in humanitarian assistance.
Local leaders and disaster response teams continue to coordinate efforts to ensure safety and provide aid amid the ongoing volcanic unrest.
