Kanlaon Volcano Logs 7 Quakes in 24 Hours
Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island recorded seven earthquakes and released over 2,100 tons of sulfur dioxide in the last 24 hours, local monitoring agencies confirmed. This increase in seismic activity signals intensified volcanic unrest, raising concerns among nearby communities.
Compared to the previous day’s four quakes, the number of tremors rose notably. Meanwhile, sulfur dioxide emissions dropped from 3,256 tons to 2,100 tons. Despite the decrease in gas output, experts remain vigilant as the volcano continues to show signs of activity.
Alert Level 3 Remains Amid Volcanic Unrest
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) maintains Alert Level 3 over Kanlaon Volcano. This level indicates a high state of unrest and warns of potential hazardous volcanic events.
Recent observations revealed that Kanlaon produced a towering 600-meter ash plume drifting southeast. Furthermore, the volcano’s structure remains inflated, hinting at magma buildup beneath its surface.
Potential Hazards and Safety Measures
Authorities caution residents about several possible dangers. These include sudden explosive eruptions, lava flows, ashfall, pyroclastic density currents, rockfalls, and lahars triggered by heavy rains. People living within six kilometers of the summit are urged to evacuate promptly to ensure their safety.
In addition, flying aircraft near the volcano is strictly prohibited to prevent accidents due to ash clouds or unexpected eruptions.
Community Response and Preparedness
Local leaders and disaster agencies continue to monitor Kanlaon closely. Evacuation centers have accommodated residents fleeing the danger zone, ensuring they receive aid and shelter. The situation remains dynamic, and authorities emphasize the importance of heeding warnings and staying alert.
