Kanlaon Volcano Logs Fewer Quakes and Emissions
Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island recorded fewer volcanic earthquakes and reduced sulfur dioxide emissions in the past 24 hours, according to recent monitoring. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported these changes on Tuesday, signaling a slight decrease in volcanic activity.
Phivolcs’ latest data showed Kanlaon experienced only four volcanic earthquakes, a significant drop from the 16 quakes recorded the day before. Alongside this, the volcano emitted 1,527 tons of sulfur dioxide, down from 2,212 tons during the previous 24-hour period.
Volcanic Activity and Safety Measures
The volcano also produced a moderate plume rising 300 meters high, drifting mostly east and southeast. Despite this, the volcanic edifice remains inflated, indicating ongoing unrest beneath the surface.
Authorities maintain Alert Level 3 over Kanlaon, which signals a high level of volcanic unrest. Local leaders emphasized the need for vigilance and preparedness amid these conditions.
Potential Hazards and Public Advisory
Phivolcs warned residents about possible volcanic hazards, including sudden explosive eruptions, lava flows, ashfall, pyroclastic currents, rockfalls, and lahars during heavy rains. The agency strongly advised those living within six kilometers of the volcano’s summit to evacuate immediately for their safety.
Moreover, all aircraft operations near Kanlaon are currently prohibited to prevent any risk to flights.
