Kanlaon Volcano Logs Three Quakes, Alert Level 3 Remains
Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island has recorded three volcanic earthquakes in the last 24 hours, a significant drop from the 67 quakes reported earlier this week. This latest update from monitoring agencies highlights ongoing volcanic activity but shows a decrease in seismic events.
Despite fewer quakes, Kanlaon Volcano’s sulfur dioxide emissions have surged to 1,658 tons, more than double the 750 tons recorded just a day before. This increase signals continued unrest beneath the volcano’s surface, urging authorities to maintain vigilance.
Volcanic Plume and Inflation Observed
The volcano emitted a towering plume reaching 900 meters high, drifting southwest, northwest, and northeast. Experts also noted that the volcano’s edifice remains inflated, which often indicates magma accumulation beneath the surface.
Due to these ongoing signs of volcanic activity, Alert Level 3 remains in effect. This alert level signals a high degree of volcanic unrest, warning nearby communities of possible hazardous events.
Potential Hazards and Safety Measures
Authorities have cautioned residents about possible volcanic dangers, including sudden explosive eruptions, lava flows, ashfall, pyroclastic density currents, rockfalls, and lahars during heavy rains. These hazards pose serious risks to communities living near the volcano.
As a precaution, residents within a six-kilometer radius from Kanlaon’s summit are advised to evacuate immediately. Additionally, all aircraft are prohibited from flying near the volcano to avoid danger from ash clouds or sudden eruptions.
Local officials and scientists continue to monitor the situation closely, ready to implement further safety protocols if necessary. They stress that vigilance and preparedness remain crucial as the volcano shows signs of persistent activity.
