Kanlaon Volcano Records Four Volcanic Quakes in 24 Hours
Four volcanic quakes rattled Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island within the last 24 hours, local authorities reported. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) issued the update early Monday morning, highlighting the increase in volcanic activity.
In its 5 a.m. bulletin, Phivolcs noted a sulfur dioxide emission of 1,383 tons recorded on Sunday, July 13. The volcanic plumes reached heights of up to 600 meters, signaling ongoing unrest. These figures confirm that Kanlaon Volcano continues to exhibit signs of elevated activity.
Rising Volcanic Quakes and Ongoing Alerts
The number of tremors at Kanlaon rose from two to four compared to the previous day’s data. Meanwhile, sulfur dioxide emissions slightly decreased from 1,726 to 1,383 tons. Despite this dip, the volcano remains under Alert Level 3, which warns of magmatic unrest beneath the surface.
At this alert level, officials recommend evacuating all residents within a six-kilometer radius from the volcano’s summit. Authorities have also prohibited flights near the volcano to prevent risks posed by volcanic emissions and ash clouds.
Safety Precautions and Community Impact
Phivolcs cautioned residents about various hazards, including sudden explosive eruptions, lava flows, ashfall, rockfalls, and lahars triggered by heavy rains. The threat of pyroclastic flows also remains a serious concern.
Social welfare agencies report that over 94,000 people continue to be affected by the volcano’s unrest. Local leaders are exploring options to acquire lands that could serve as permanent relocation sites for evacuees displaced by Kanlaon’s activity.
