Kanlaon Volcano Registers More Quakes in 24 Hours
Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island has recorded a significant rise in activity, with 19 volcanic earthquakes detected within the last 24 hours, local geological experts said. This marks a notable increase compared to the four quakes documented the day before.
Alongside these quakes, the volcano released 1,232 tons of sulfur dioxide gas during the same period, a noticeable drop from the 2,626 tons recorded previously. Despite this decrease, continuous degassing persists, with a thick plume rising approximately 900 meters and drifting eastward.
Ongoing Volcanic Unrest and Safety Measures
Authorities reported that Kanlaon’s structure remains inflated, signaling ongoing subterranean pressure. Due to these conditions, Alert Level 3 is still in place, warning of a high risk of volcanic unrest. Officials emphasize the potential for sudden explosive eruptions, lava flows, ashfall, pyroclastic density currents, rockfalls, and lahars, especially during heavy rains.
Residents living within a six-kilometer radius of the volcano are advised to avoid approaching the summit. Additionally, flying any aircraft near Kanlaon is strictly prohibited to ensure safety. The Office of Civil Defense recently declared a suspension of entry into the extended danger zone for farming and livelihood activities starting June 24, reflecting growing concerns about a possible eruption.
Potential Hazards Highlighted
The agency urged the public to stay alert to the following volcanic hazards:
- Sudden explosive eruptions
- Lava flows or effusions
- Ashfall
- Pyroclastic density currents
- Rockfalls
- Lahars triggered by heavy rainfall
Authorities continue to monitor Kanlaon closely and remind communities to follow safety protocols and heed official warnings.
