Kanlaon Volcano Records Nine Volcanic Earthquakes
Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island experienced nine volcanic earthquakes on Friday, July 25, sources said. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported these events on Saturday, highlighting ongoing activity at the volcano.
In the last 24 hours, Kanlaon Volcano emitted 1,447 tonnes of sulfur dioxide. This significant gas output signals continued volcanic unrest. Phivolcs also observed that the volcano’s structure had swollen, while its plume remained hidden by clouds.
Alert Level 3 Remains Amid Potential Hazards
Kanlaon remains at Alert Level 3, a status indicating intensified magmatic unrest beneath the surface. Authorities warn residents to stay alert for sudden explosive eruptions, lava flows, ashfall, rockfalls, and lahars, especially during heavy rainfall.
Since its eruption in December 2024, the volcano has maintained this alert level. Local officials urge communities near Kanlaon to follow safety protocols and prepare for possible emergencies.
Precautions and Monitoring Continue
Phivolcs continues to closely monitor Kanlaon’s activity, emphasizing the volcano’s unpredictable nature. Residents are advised to avoid entering the permanent danger zone and heed all warnings issued by authorities.
