Kanlaon Volcano Sulfur Dioxide Emissions Surge
Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island has seen its sulfur dioxide emissions nearly triple, reaching 6,702 tons in the past 24 hours. This marks a significant increase from the 2,138 tons recorded the previous day, according to local monitoring agencies.
The volcano, which remains highly active, also registered two volcanic earthquakes in the same period, a decrease from seven quakes recorded the day before. Alert Level 3 remains in effect, signaling a high state of volcanic unrest and the potential for sudden hazardous activity.
Volcanic Activity Details and Precautions
Recent observations noted a moderate ash plume rising 500 meters above the summit, drifting northeast and east. Experts reported that Kanlaon’s structure continues to swell, accompanied by ongoing gas emissions. These signs suggest that volcanic pressure beneath the surface is still building.
Authorities warn residents near Kanlaon to prepare for possible dangers including explosive eruptions, lava flows, ashfall, pyroclastic flows, rockfalls, and lahars during heavy rain. Evacuation orders remain in place for communities within six kilometers of the volcano’s summit. Air traffic near the volcano is also restricted to ensure safety.
Community Impact and Safety Measures
Over 90,000 people in the surrounding areas have been affected by the volcano’s unrest, with government agencies providing assistance and monitoring the situation closely. Local officials urge everyone to stay alert and comply with evacuation directives to minimize risk.
