Kathleen Espenido Overcomes Life Obstacles with Strength
Kathleen “Kai” Espenido, a Filipino Australian beauty queen and surfer, has shown remarkable resilience as she overcomes life obstacles and pursues her dreams. Representing the sun-kissed island of Siargao, she proudly holds the #18 spot among the official candidates for Bb. Pilipinas 2025.
Her journey hasn’t been easy. After the loss of her father Frank, Kathleen’s mother, Liezl, took on the challenge of managing their family hostel alone. “Still reeling from my dad’s passing, Typhoon Odette-ravaged Siargao in 2021 and destroyed our livelihood, leaving us with nothing,” she shared. As the eldest sibling, Kathleen felt the urgent need to support her family.
From Introvert to Public Figure
Despite being naturally introverted, Kathleen ventured into show business by joining Pinoy Big Brother Kumunity Season 10. This experience helped her develop confidence and taught her how to handle difficult situations. With the prize money she earned, she began rebuilding her family’s life back in Siargao. Today, their hostel is thriving once more.
Her inspiration came from watching Catriona Gray win the Miss Universe crown in 2018. Even at 14, Kathleen was determined to follow a similar path. Recently crowned Miss Fit Philippines in July 2024, she embraces the title as a platform to promote physical and mental health. “Winning the Miss Fit Philippines crown was an amazing personal milestone for me. I am thrilled that my efforts and hard work have paid off,” she said.
Preparing for Bb. Pilipinas 2025
Kathleen is now focused on preparing for the biggest stage in Philippine pageantry: Bb. Pilipinas. She is undergoing intensive training in Q&A, styling, fitness, and runway skills, guided by experts from Reign Project Management. Her team helps develop not only her appearance but also her personality and confidence.
More than just beauty, Kathleen embodies grace and purpose. On her recent birthday, she launched the KAI Project — standing for Knowledge, Action, and Inspiration. This advocacy aims to empower people to make positive changes and build resilience in their communities.
As part of her mission, Kathleen visited Nayon ng Kabataan in Mandaluyong, a shelter providing care to abandoned and abused children. She distributed personal hygiene kits to around 100 kids, marking the official launch of her project.
Looking Ahead: Fashion and Advocacy
Kathleen plans to launch her own swimwear brand inspired by her island roots. She aspires to make waves in the fashion world while uplifting others through her advocacy. When asked about her role models, she credits her mother for shaping who she is today. “She’s independent, and she’s the one who shaped me to be this person that I am today,” Kathleen said.
To her supporters, she expressed heartfelt thanks: “Thank you! It is a good feeling to have this support system as I vie for the Bb. Pilipinas title.”
