Roads Blocked by Lahar Overflow in La Castellana
BACOLOD CITY – The local government of La Castellana in Negros Occidental is actively clearing roads blocked by lahar and debris caused by a creek overflow in Sitio Tamburong, Barangay Biak na Bato. This situation developed two weeks after the explosive eruption of Kanlaon Volcano on May 13, which led to ashfall in various areas of the province, including La Castellana.
Local authorities and rescue teams have worked together to address the obstruction on Biak na Bato Highway, which has been closed to commuters since late Friday night, May 24. According to community leaders, the overflow resulted from heavy rains that washed ash and debris from higher areas into the creek, causing it to spill over and block a vital bridge and road section.
Alternate Routes and Safety Measures
Authorities advised motorists to take an alternate path through Barangay Cabacungan while clearing operations continue. Fortunately, no residents were directly affected because those living near the creek had already evacuated to safer centers. These evacuation protocols are in place since the area lies within the four to six-kilometer Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ) around Kanlaon Volcano.
Local experts noted that a similar lahar overflow happened after the volcano’s previous eruption in early June 2024. The Office of Civil Defense continues to urge residents to stay alert due to the volcano remaining at Alert Level 3, signaling ongoing risks of eruption.
Community Updates and Precautions
Updates shared by local public information officers show ongoing efforts to manage the aftermath of the volcanic activity and its impact on infrastructure. Residents are reminded to follow official advisories and avoid restricted zones for their safety.
This recent lahar overflow highlights the continuing challenges faced by communities living near active volcanoes and the importance of coordinated disaster response.
