La Mesa Dam Still Overflowing Due to Heavy Rains
MANILA, Philippines — The La Mesa Dam is still overflowing as persistent rains brought by the southwest monsoon continue to swell its water level, local authorities said on Tuesday. The dam’s water level has reached 80.17 meters, exceeding the critical threshold of 80.15 meters that triggers overflow.
This ongoing overflow began on Monday afternoon and remains a major concern for nearby communities. Officials emphasized the need for vigilance, especially in low-lying barangays along the Tullahan River, which runs through Quezon City, Valenzuela City, Caloocan City, Malabon City, and Navotas.
Warnings Issued for Affected Communities
Residents near riverbanks in the affected areas have been urged to take immediate precautionary measures. Local leaders noted that flooding could worsen in these zones due to the continuous release of water from the dam.
In addition to the dam’s overflow, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) forecasted heavy rains exceeding 200 millimeters on Tuesday in Metro Manila and nearby provinces such as Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, and Occidental Mindoro.
Weather Systems Adding to the Risk
Pagasa also reported monitoring two low-pressure areas (LPAs) within the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), named LPA 07g and LPA 07i. LPA 07g shows a high chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours, which could bring more rainfall and exacerbate flooding risks.
With these weather conditions, authorities continue to prepare for potential emergencies and advise the public to stay alert and heed official announcements.
