La Mesa Ecopark First Anniversary Celebrates Green Success
The La Mesa Ecopark first anniversary under Manila Water Foundation’s care marks a year of remarkable environmental progress. Since June 2024, this green sanctuary in Quezon City has grown as a model for urban ecological harmony. The four pillars guiding its transformation—watershed conservation, forest protection, biodiversity preservation, and climate action—have shaped its renewed mission.
The park reopened after ABS-CBN Foundation’s management ended, with Manila Water Foundation stepping in to lead its revival. The La Mesa Ecopark first anniversary event highlighted these environmental strides and deepened public commitment to sustainability. Visitors witnessed the unveiling of two new attractions: a vibrant butterfly garden and a pickleball court, enhancing both education and recreation.
New Attractions and Stronger Biodiversity Commitment
A ceremonial tree planting featuring the native Mangkono tree symbolized the park’s ongoing dedication to biodiversity. To encourage more visitors, Manila Water Foundation offered free park entrance on June 28–29, drawing families and nature enthusiasts alike. Local leaders, environmental advocates, and community groups came together to celebrate this milestone.
“The first year has been about reintroducing the park to the public—not just as a recreational space, but as a vital environmental hub. For the years to come, we remain committed to transforming La Mesa Ecopark into a model for urban ecological harmony,” a local official said.
Visitor Impact and Conservation Achievements
Between June 2024 and May 2025, La Mesa Ecopark welcomed over 120,000 visitors. During this period, the park planted 4,340 endemic forest trees and mobilized 1,461 volunteers who contributed nearly 6,000 hours of service. Its biodiversity now includes more than 220 species, with plants accounting for over 60% and birds nearly a quarter of the total.
Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities that blend conservation and fun, such as tree nurturing, seed planting, and bird watching. These are balanced with outdoor adventures like paintball, archery tag, rappelling, obstacle courses, and biking trails. Food stalls add to the lively atmosphere, making every visit both educational and enjoyable.
Challenges and Future Plans for La Mesa Ecopark
Despite the warm public reception, Manila Water Foundation recognizes the challenge of shifting perceptions toward environmental stewardship. It plans to introduce more eco-friendly programs and attractions carefully designed to protect local wildlife and maintain the park’s natural balance.
Future expansions will follow thorough studies and community consultations, ensuring La Mesa Ecopark remains Metro Manila’s vital green frontier. This ongoing effort aims to inspire urban residents to cherish and protect their natural environment.
