La Salle Green Hills Responds to Traffic Issues
La Salle Green Hills (LSGH) has addressed concerns regarding the heavy traffic and frequent violations recorded near its campus along Ortigas Avenue. In a letter to the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) chair Don Artes, LSGH President Br. Edmundo Fernandez, FSC acknowledged the heavy traffic congestion, especially during student drop-off and pick-up hours.
Fernandez emphasized that after discussions with MMDA representatives before the start of the school year, the school has implemented several measures to ease traffic buildup around the area. These include adjusting traffic flow, expanding drop-off and pick-up points, revising class schedules, and promoting carpooling and the use of school buses.
Campus Traffic Adjustments and Partnerships
The school has also restructured traffic routes within the campus and nearby Greenhills East Village to improve vehicle movement and reduce congestion on Ortigas Avenue. Fernandez noted, “We partnered with the Greenhills East Village Association to allow access within the village and maximize the use of our school gates.” This collaboration aims to distribute traffic more effectively and prevent bottlenecks.
Additionally, the LSGH football field has been designated as an extra drop-off and pick-up area to better accommodate vehicles picking up students and visitors inside the campus. These adjustments are designed to create a safer and more efficient environment for all road users.
Staggered Schedules and Online Classes Help Ease Traffic
To further manage traffic flow, LSGH has staggered class dismissal times across all grade levels. Senior High School students attend online classes once weekly, which helps reduce the number of vehicles arriving simultaneously. Fernandez explained that these changes contribute significantly to lowering traffic volume during peak hours.
Moreover, the school has increased the number of accredited school buses and actively encourages parents to participate in carpooling schemes. The administration is also exploring point-to-point transport services for students and staff to further alleviate road congestion.
Strict Compliance with Traffic Rules and MMDA Policies
The school administration consistently reminds motorists to follow traffic regulations enforced by the MMDA. Fernandez expressed strong support for the MMDA’s No Contact Apprehension Policy (NCAP) along Ortigas Avenue, trusting that it will be implemented fairly and effectively.
He assured the public that LSGH is working closely with the MMDA to address public safety concerns and promote orderly traffic flow. “Together with the MMDA, and with the cooperation of parents, guardians, and stakeholders, LSGH remains steadfast in its commitment to implementing sustainable solutions that improve traffic flow while ensuring the safety and well-being of our students,” Fernandez stated.
MMDA Reports High Number of Violations
Prior to LSGH’s response, MMDA chair Don Artes reported that over 1,500 traffic violation tickets were issued around the LSGH vicinity from July to August this year alone. Officials noted that despite the fines, violations continue to be a problem, suggesting that penalties may no longer deter some motorists.
As a result, the MMDA plans to implement more drastic measures to enforce traffic rules near LSGH and improve compliance among drivers.
