La Union Launches Trash to Goods Recycling Program

La Union’s Trash to Goods Recycling Program Promotes Sustainability

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union – The provincial government of La Union is actively advancing environmental sustainability through its Trash to Goods recycling program. This initiative, led by the Provincial Government-Environment and Natural Resources Office (PG-ENRO), encourages residents to exchange recyclable waste for canned goods, fostering responsible waste management in the community.

The program, launched in April 2023 at the La Union Convention Center, partners with local organizations to promote a circular economy. It focuses on converting plastic waste into valuable resources, reducing pollution and supporting sustainability efforts. Residents can bring various recyclable materials such as plastic bottles, tarpaulins, and styrofoams and receive canned goods in return, with the exchange based on the weight of the waste collected.

Encouraging Community Participation and Waste Reduction

Local experts report that this exchange system motivates community members to collect and properly dispose of plastic waste instead of discarding it irresponsibly. “This program ensures that waste materials are reintegrated into the economy instead of being discarded, ensuring sustainability and solid waste reduction,” a provincial official highlighted.

So far, the initiative has gathered a total of 8.4 metric tons of plastic waste from 15 local government units supporting the cause. This includes 4.48 metric tons of Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) plastics and 3.94 metric tons of mixed plastics. In exchange, the program distributed 175 boxes of canned goods to participating residents.

Impact and Future Goals of the Program

Community leaders said the Trash to Goods recycling program not only helps reduce environmental pollution but also promotes economic benefits by turning waste into valuable commodities. By incentivizing recycling, the province hopes to expand the program’s reach and further encourage sustainable habits among residents.

This initiative exemplifies how local governments can lead efforts in environmental responsibility through collaboration and innovation. It also highlights the importance of community involvement in tackling waste management challenges.
