Labor Disputes Settled with 373.2 Million Benefits

Over 2,500 Workers to Receive Benefits After Labor Disputes Settled

More than 2,500 employees from three prominent universities and a manufacturing company are set to receive a combined total of P373.2 million in benefits. This follows the successful resolution of four major labor disputes, according to sources familiar with the matter. The resolution was reached through voluntary dispute resolution mechanisms that prevented work stoppages and ensured continued industrial peace across the institutions involved.

Settlement at University of Santo Tomas Over Faculty Shares

At the University of Santo Tomas (UST), tensions arose due to unsettled matters in the 2021–2026 collective bargaining agreement (CBA). The dispute mainly centered on the delayed release of faculty shares from tuition fee increases between 2020 and 2023. The faculty union filed a notice of strike on March 25, but after mediation efforts, the issue was resolved on May 20. Approximately 1,700 faculty members will receive P294 million, which includes P220 million from tuition fee-related shares and an additional P74.7 million in other benefits.

University of the East Medical Center Dispute Resolved

Similarly, at the University of the East Ramon Magsaysay Memorial Medical Center (UERM), a deadlock over 11 economic provisions prompted a strike notice on March 13. Key issues involved salary adjustments, bonuses, and educational aid. Thanks to conciliatory efforts, a settlement was reached on May 6. A total of 601 employees will benefit from P42.4 million under the new 2025–2027 CBA.

Faculty Retirement Policy Revised at Lyceum of the Philippines

At Lyceum of the Philippines University-Manila (LPU), the faculty union raised concerns over a mandatory retirement policy in place since 1978. This led to a strike notice on March 26. The policy was revised on April 22 to permit voluntary retirement for employees under 50 years old with at least 20 years of service. The agreement was finalized shortly after, on April 24, awarding 38 employees a P4 million benefits package.

United Pulp and Paper Workers Secure Wage Increase

Meanwhile, workers at United Pulp and Paper Co., Inc. (UPPC) filed a strike notice on April 2 over wage issues. Negotiations concluded successfully on May 14, granting 196 employees a P32.8 million package. The new collective bargaining agreement is expected to be signed in early June.

Commitment to Industrial Harmony Highlighted

These successful settlements demonstrate the current administration’s commitment to promoting industrial harmony through voluntary dispute resolution. The National Conciliation and Mediation Board (NCMB) played a vital role in ensuring stable labor-management relations, preventing disruptions, and safeguarding workers’ rights.
