Laguna de Bay Water Level Surpasses Critical Threshold

Laguna de Bay Water Level Surpasses Critical Threshold Amid Heavy Rain

MANILA, Philippines — The average water level in Laguna de Bay has exceeded the critical level, raising alarms among authorities who caution that it may take months for the lake to return to normal, even if the rains ease. This situation puts lakeshore communities at risk of severe flooding.

The Laguna Lake Development Authority (LLDA) reported that as of 10 a.m. Thursday, the lake’s water level rose to 12.51 meters, just above the critical threshold of 12.50 meters. This increase was driven by persistent heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon, locally called habagat.

Flood Risks and Warnings for Vulnerable Communities

“Based on technical assessment, once the lake exceeds its critical level, it may take several months for the water to recede to its normal level, even if rainfall decreases,” the LLDA stated in an advisory. It emphasized that the prolonged high water level significantly raises the chances of extended flooding and widespread damage, especially in low-lying and lakeshore areas.

The agency also noted that weather conditions, intensified by low-pressure systems, will continue to bring moderate to heavy rainfall over Laguna de Bay in the coming days. Therefore, residents in flood-prone and lakeshore communities are urged to prepare for possible evacuation and take preventive measures to safeguard their lives and properties.

Weather Forecast and Ongoing Typhoon Update

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), Laguna is expected to experience heavy to intense rainfall ranging from 100 to 200 millimeters from Thursday through Friday noon due to the habagat. As of 2 p.m., Laguna was placed under an orange rainfall warning, indicating 15 to 30 millimeters of rain within three hours.

Meanwhile, Typhoon Emong remains strong with maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour and gusts up to 150 kph. The typhoon was last reported about 175 kilometers west of Dagupan City, Pangasinan, moving very slowly.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and advise the public to stay alert and heed warnings. The combination of the elevated Laguna de Bay water level, ongoing heavy rains, and the nearby typhoon underscores the need for vigilance and readiness.
