Lakas-CMD Membership Surges to 108 in House

The number of Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) members in the House of Representatives has grown significantly, reaching 108 just two months before the 20th Congress begins. This expansion occurred after five more House representatives joined the leading political party led by House Speaker Martin Romualdez.

On June 4, Speaker Romualdez, who represents Leyte’s 1st district, administered the oath of membership to newly elected representatives Leandro Legarda Leviste (Independent) from Batangas’ 1st district, Mauricio Domogan (Independent) of Baguio City’s lone district, and John Tracy Cagas (NP) from Davao del Sur’s lone district. The day before, June 3, representatives-elect Edwin Crusado (PMP) of Cotabato’s 1st district and Reynaldo Salvacion (Independent) of Marinduque also took their oath before the Speaker.

Strengthening Support for the 20th Congress

The oath-taking ceremony was attended by fellow House members and Lakas-CMD officials. With these five new additions, the party’s presence in the next Congress now totals 108 members. Additionally, on the same day, Erik Martel, mayor-elect of Abucay, Bataan, and former Iloilo City Mayor Jed Mabilog also joined Lakas-CMD.

Speaker Romualdez expressed gratitude to the new members for selecting Lakas-CMD as their political home. He remarked, “Your decision means that you share—as we all in Lakas-CMD do—the aspiration of President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. for our people to have a better life and to sustain our country’s economic growth.” He added that their inclusion reinforces congressional backing for President Marcos, his legislative agenda, and the Bagong Pilipinas initiatives.

The Meaning Behind Joining Lakas-CMD

Romualdez also expressed hope that the newly sworn-in lawmakers would engage actively and meaningfully with the party and its members. He looked forward to deeper discussions and mutual camaraderie.

For Leandro Legarda Leviste, joining Lakas-CMD felt like returning to his roots. “Having run as an independent, I am joining Lakas just as it was my mother’s first party when she was elected senator in 1998. It feels meaningful to return to these roots at a time when unity and progress are needed most,” he said. “I look forward to working with other members of Lakas to pass legislation that will benefit the people of the 1st district of Batangas.”

Legarda Leviste’s mother, Senator Loren Legarda, was the youngest senator elected in 1998 and served as Lakas vice president for the Visayas at age 38. At that time, Legarda Leviste was only five years old.

Lakas-CMD’s Growing Influence in Congress

The 108 congressman-members of Lakas-CMD now represent at least one-third of the House’s membership in the 20th Congress, which begins this July. House Deputy Speaker David “Jay-Jay” Suarez noted that Speaker Romualdez can now count on the support of at least 285 House members to continue his leadership in the upcoming session.

This surge in membership signals a strong political alignment and consolidates Lakas-CMD’s position as a dominant force in the lower chamber.
