Heightened Police Presence Near Balabagan School
Authorities in Lanao del Sur have increased police deployment near the lone public tertiary institution in Balabagan town after the tragic killing of a school teacher on August 4. This move aims to ensure the safety of students, teachers, and school officials amid rising concerns about violence.
During a recent radio interview, Lanao del Sur police director Col. Caezar Cabuhat confirmed the deployment of both plainclothes and uniformed officers around Balabagan Trade School. He emphasized that the police presence is designed to prevent any further acts of violence targeting the school community.
Teacher Shot Dead Outside School
The victim, Danilo Barba Jr., a teacher from Trento, Agusan del Sur, was fatally shot in the morning in front of Balabagan Trade School in Barangay Narra. A lone gunman wielding a .45-caliber pistol carried out the attack, killing Barba instantly.
Officials reported that the suspect, a Grade 11 student identified as “Kaizer,” was apprehended after eyewitnesses, including the school principal and a nearby tricycle driver, pointed him out as the assailant. The student surrendered with the assistance of his uncle, a police officer who helped authorities locate the gunman.
Confession Reveals Motive Behind Shooting
During the inquest proceedings, the suspect admitted to the crime, shocking investigators. “The suspect admitted that he shot his teacher because he gave him a failing grade,” Col. Cabuhat relayed, sharing the student’s confession to the prosecutor.
Community members expressed alarm at the incident, which has deeply affected the school environment and raised questions about student discipline and school safety.
Teachers Considered Resignation but Changed Minds
Following the shooting, some teachers had contemplated resigning en masse due to safety concerns. However, after discussions involving local officials, the town mayor, the school principal, and the police, they decided to stay. The assurance of police and Army deployment as peacekeepers helped ease their fears.
Strict Security Measures Implemented
In addition to the police presence, authorities have enforced strict inspections at the school’s entrance gate. This includes screening students, teachers, parents, and visitors to prevent any recurrence of violent incidents on campus.
Local leaders noted that these combined efforts aim to restore a sense of security and normalcy within the school community.
