Land Transportation Office Rolls Out License Plates Distribution
Motorcycle riders who have yet to receive their license plates may soon get them directly from Land Transportation Office patrol vehicles stationed at key checkpoints. This new initiative aims to speed up the distribution process and ease the burden on riders still waiting for their plates.
LTO enforcers will stop motorcycles without license plates, and if the plates are available in the patrol vehicle, they will hand them over immediately. If the plates are not on hand, officers will assist riders in tracking the status of their license plates. This hands-on approach is designed to solve long-standing delays and improve service.
Focus on High-Volume Regions First
The LTO will initially implement this program in Metro Manila, Central Luzon, and Calabarzon, where the backlog of unissued motorcycle license plates remains highest. Although the agency has not yet announced an official start date, riders in these areas can expect to see patrol vehicles equipped for plate distribution soon.
“This time, they should not be afraid because there’s no penalty if they have no plates. Instead, their plates will be handed to them on the spot,” LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza said in Filipino.
Clearing the Backlog and Raising Awareness
This program follows news that the Department of Transportation cleared the backlog of 5.4 million motorcycle license plates. To ensure riders are well-informed, the LTO is coordinating with local government units, motorcycle rider groups, and tricycle operator associations. The goal is to raise awareness on how to claim license plates efficiently.
Kiosks and assistance desks will be set up at motorcycle parking areas and hubs to support this campaign. These help desks will provide information and facilitate the claiming process for riders.
Additional Support Through Palit-Plaka Program
The LTO is also establishing desks for the “Palit-Plaka” (change plate) program. This initiative targets motorcycle owners assigned seven-character plates and those who have not yet received their official plates for motorcycles registered in 2017 or earlier. It offers a chance to update and replace outdated or missing plates with proper ones.
This multi-pronged effort signals a strong push by the LTO to resolve long-standing issues in motorcycle license plate distribution. It also reflects a commitment to better serve the riding public and ensure compliance with regulations.
