Landslide Causes Power Interruption in Benguet and Baguio
A recent landslide severely damaged the base of an electric pole under the Benguet Electric Cooperative (Beneco), sparking an emergency power interruption in parts of La Trinidad, Itogon, and Bokod in Benguet, as well as several sections of Baguio City.
The landslide caused the disruption of three feeder lines, leading to widespread outages. Despite challenging weather conditions, Beneco is committed to restoring power within 10 to 12 hours.
Efforts to Restore Power Amid Difficult Weather
“Beneco is doing its best to restore power, but the weather is uncooperative,” said Laarni Ilagan, Beneco’s community relations officer. Teams are working around the clock to repair the damaged lines and bring electricity back to affected communities.
In the past days, a series of tropical cyclones struck Northern Luzon, leaving many areas in Benguet without power. Beneco’s linemen continue to operate tirelessly to resolve these issues alongside the new problems caused by the landslide.
Safety First During Restoration Efforts
On Monday, Beneco General Manager Melchor Licoben met with linemen and engineers to emphasize the importance of safety while restoring electricity. “While we want to restore power, (we) never compromise the safety of our people,” he said.
Beneco serves as the sole electric distributor for Baguio and Benguet, managing over 250,000 connections and 145,000 consumer-members. Local officials noted the cooperative’s swift response to the emergency and the ongoing commitment to reliable service despite adverse conditions.
