Las Piñas Honors Battle of Zapote Bridge
The Las Piñas City Tourism and Cultural Office (LPTCO) marked the 126th anniversary of the second Battle of Zapote Bridge on Friday, June 13. This event highlighted the bravery and sacrifice of Filipino soldiers in their fight for freedom. Paul Ahljay San Miguel, head of LPTCO, led a solemn wreath-laying ceremony to pay tribute to the heroes who fought valiantly against American forces.
San Miguel emphasized the significance of remembering the two historic clashes that took place at Zapote Bridge. The first battle occurred in 1897 between Spanish colonial troops and Filipino Katipuneros during the Philippine Revolution. The second, more extensive battle happened in 1899, involving Filipino fighters and American soldiers during the Philippine-American War.
Remembering Filipino Heroes and Historic Landmarks
The wreath-laying ceremony served as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by Filipino heroes in the pursuit of independence. San Miguel remarked that these commemorations help keep the spirit of patriotism alive, honoring those who laid down their lives for the country.
He also noted that Zapote Bridge remains a vital historical landmark carefully preserved by the city government. Its preservation allows current and future generations to connect with the nation’s past and appreciate the struggles endured to achieve freedom.
Local leaders and residents gathered to reflect on the importance of these battles and to celebrate Filipino courage. The event fostered a sense of pride and unity among the community, reinforcing the relevance of history in shaping national identity.
