Remembering the Battle of Zapote Bridge
The Las Piñas City Tourism and Cultural Office (LPTCO) marked the 126th year of the second Battle of Zapote Bridge on Friday, June 13. This annual event honors the courage and sacrifice of Filipino soldiers during this pivotal clash. Paul Ahljay San Miguel, head of LPTCO, led a solemn wreath-laying ceremony to pay tribute to the heroes who fought bravely against American forces.
San Miguel emphasized that the Battle of Zapote Bridge represents two significant moments in Philippine history. The first battle occurred in 1897, when Filipino Katipuneros faced Spanish troops during the Philippine Revolution. The second and larger battle took place in 1899, as Filipinos fought to defend their independence against American forces. “Ang alaala ng ating mga bayani ay patuloy nating ginugunita,” local leaders noted during the event.
Preserving History and Honoring Heroes
The ceremony serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made for the nation’s freedom. San Miguel stated that the wreath-laying is a way to keep the memory of these historic battles alive for younger generations. The Zapote Bridge itself stands as a preserved landmark, maintained by the city government to honor this rich history.
This annual commemoration unites the community in reflection and pride. The event not only highlights the bravery of Filipino fighters but also encourages Filipinos to remember the struggles that shaped their country. “Ito ang ating kasaysayan, hindi dapat makalimutan,” local officials observed.
