CHR Calls for Urgent Passage of LGBTQI Rights Bills
The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has strongly urged lawmakers to prioritize and pass the bills protecting the rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex (LGBTQI) community. As the 20th Congress begins, the CHR emphasized the need to uphold equality and justice through these legislative measures.
“As the 20th Congress is set to begin, the Commission expresses its hope that these legislative measures will finally be prioritized — grounded in the principles of equality, justice, and human rights,” the CHR said in a statement. The commission stressed that a truly inclusive society is one where safe spaces are guaranteed rights, free from stigma, discrimination, and hate.
Key Bills Highlighted: SOGIESC Equality and Anti-Discrimination
Among the proposed laws, the CHR highlighted the importance of the Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, Gender Expression, or Sex Characteristics (SOGIESC) Equality Bill and the Comprehensive Anti-Discrimination Bill (CADB). These are vital to fulfilling the government’s duty to protect the LGBTQI community.
The commission clarified that these proposals do not grant special privileges but address long-standing inequalities. “It is important to emphasize that these proposals do not seek to provide undue advantage to the LGBTQI community, but rather to address systemic inequities and ensure a safe and respectful space for all,” the CHR stated.
Solidarity During Pride Month and Beyond
The CHR released its statement during Pride Month to show support and recognition of the LGBTQI community’s freedom, identity, and diversity. Serving as the country’s Gender and Development Ombud, the commission reminded the public that Pride represents more than celebration—it is also a protest advocating for the community’s rights.
This call to action encourages lawmakers to enact these protections and foster a more inclusive society. For more news and updates on LGBTQI rights, visit Filipinokami.com.
