Leandro Legarda Leviste Donates School Bags Early to Batangas Students
Representative Leandro Legarda Leviste has generously donated over 150,000 school bags to every student in the 1st District of Batangas. This early initiative marks one of the largest private efforts to support education in the Philippines.
Through the Lingkod Legarda Leviste Foundation, the school bags were distributed to elementary and high schools at the start of the academic year. Each bag contains supplies carefully selected to match the needs of the student’s grade level, ensuring children are fully equipped from day one.
Wide Reach Across Batangas’ 1st District
The 1st District, which includes Balayan, Calaca, Calatagan, Lemery, Lian, Nasugbu, Taal, and Tuy, warmly welcomed this support. Parents, students, and teachers expressed gratitude for the effort, which was carried out at no expense to the government.
Leviste personally funded the donation, emphasizing his commitment to alleviating educational challenges. Last school year, he also introduced a program providing students with personal financial assistance, with plans to expand this support further.
Ambitious Plans to Support Filipino Students
As a young billionaire entrepreneur turned public servant, Leviste shifted his focus to education and poverty reduction after selling a major stake in Solar Philippines New Energy Corporation. Now in Congress, he is actively pushing a bill to grant every Filipino student a monthly allowance of Php 1,000, from kindergarten through college, regardless of their background.
This allowance is intended to cover essential expenses such as food, transportation, and other school-related costs. The proposal also includes seeking donations and alternative funding sources to sustain the program.
Philanthropy Driven by Personal Commitment
Leviste views his role as more than just a legislator. “I see it as my responsibility to share what I have with others, especially to address the shortage of funding for education in the Philippines,” he said. “A lack of budget for basic needs like food, transportation, or school supplies should not be an obstacle for any child’s education.”
While government efforts continue, Leviste remains focused on using proceeds from his businesses to fund his philanthropic projects. His early donation of school bags highlights a hands-on approach to improving education access and support.
