Leptospirosis Cases Rise Amid Floods and Storms

MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) has reported 2,396 leptospirosis cases nationwide since June, signaling a potential increase ahead. This surge follows weeks of heavy flooding caused by the southwest monsoon and several tropical cyclones.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that spreads when humans come into contact with water contaminated by the urine of infected animals. The DOH is closely monitoring the situation as the rainy season progresses.

Current Situation and Government Response

From June 8 to August 7, the DOH logged 2,396 leptospirosis cases. This period began shortly after the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced the start of the rainy season. Local health facilities have been put on high alert and have opened specialized leptospirosis fast lanes to expedite patient consultations.

“In line with this, DOH hospitals across the country are on alert and have opened several leptospirosis fast lanes to speed up check-ups for patients seeking consultation,” the agency stated in Filipino.

The agency is preparing for a rise in cases due to flooding caused by the southwest monsoon and recent cyclones—Crising (Wipha), Dante (Francisco), and Emong (Co-may)—since July 21. These weather events have increased the risk of waterborne infections across affected areas.

Recent Trends and Preventive Measures

Last week alone, 569 new leptospirosis cases were recorded nationwide amid the impact of three successive tropical cyclones in late July, sources said. Health authorities urge the public to avoid wading through floodwaters and to seek medical attention immediately if symptoms appear.

The DOH continues to educate communities on preventive practices and is coordinating with local governments to enhance response efforts. Residents in flood-prone areas are advised to maintain proper hygiene and to promptly report any signs of illness.
