Leyte 1st District Representative Expected to Lead Again
Leyte 1st District Representative Martin Romualdez is poised to continue his leadership of the House of Representatives in the 20th Congress. Deputy Speaker David “Jay-Jay” Suarez revealed that Romualdez has secured the backing of more than two-thirds of the newly elected lawmakers, signaling strong support for his role as Speaker.
Specifically, Suarez stated that at least 240 out of the 315 elected representatives have pledged their support. “This is already a supermajority,” he said, emphasizing the solid foundation Romualdez has within the chamber.
Strong Support Across Political Blocs
Suarez highlighted that as of May 17, over 240 members had signed a manifesto confirming their support for Romualdez’s leadership, with the number still growing. He noted, “This is not just about party politics. It’s about unity, output, and trust in the Speaker’s steady hand and principled leadership.”
The initiative has gained endorsement from lawmakers representing various major political groups. These include Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD), National Unity Party (NUP), Nationalist People’s Coalition (NPC), Nacionalista Party (NP), Partido Federal ng Pilipinas (PFP), and the Party-list Coalition Foundation Inc. (PCFI).
Implications of the Broad Backing
With such extensive support, Suarez declared that any challenge to the Speaker’s leadership would be unrealistic. He added that although no formal public event has been scheduled yet, a full declaration of support is expected before the 20th Congress officially opens in July.
“The House wants stability and progress, and Speaker Romualdez delivers both,” Suarez said, underscoring the importance of continuous, reliable leadership for the legislative body.
