Strong Support for Martin Romualdez as Speaker
Leyte 4th District Rep. Richard Gomez confidently predicts that Martin Romualdez, the representative of Leyte’s 1st district, will retain his position as Speaker of the House of Representatives. Gomez emphasized that Romualdez continues to enjoy broad backing among fellow lawmakers, making his hold on the speakership very likely.
“I think Speaker Romualdez will still be the speaker. He did well, especially for the [Eastern Visayas] region, here in Leyte,” Gomez shared during an interview on June 22. This strong endorsement highlights the ongoing political support Romualdez commands within Congress.
Political Alliances and Potential Challengers
Romualdez, who is a cousin of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., reportedly holds the backing of the House’s so-called ‘supermajority’ coalition. His leadership is seen as pivotal for the region and the entire House.
Meanwhile, some names have surfaced as possible alternatives or encouraged contenders for the speakership. These include Rep. Alfredo “Albee” Benitez from Bacolod City and Rep. Paolo Duterte, brother of Vice President Sara Duterte, who are being mentioned as potential challengers.
Party Support and Committee Roles
Richard Gomez, who notably did not sign the impeachment complaint against the vice president, revealed that his political party, Partido Federal ng Pilipinas, has already thrown its support behind Romualdez. “It’s good for Leyte and the entire region if he stays as speaker,” Gomez reiterated, underscoring the regional benefits of Romualdez’s continued leadership.
Regarding committee assignments in the upcoming 20th Congress, Gomez explained that these decisions rest with the House leadership. During the 19th Congress, he served as vice chair of four committees, including those on Dangerous Drugs and Youth and Sports Development.
“It’s up to them if they will give me [a chairmanship]. We just submit a list to them,” Gomez said, reflecting the customary process of committee appointments.
Recent Election and Outlook
Gomez recently secured his second term in Congress after winning the May 2025 midterm elections. His ongoing influence and experience in the House position him well as the new Congress takes shape.
