Licensed online gaming operators unite for safer industry
A group of licensed online gaming operators in the Philippines has joined forces to create a safer and more sustainable online gambling environment. The PlaySafe Alliance of the Philippines, formed by 19 founding companies including DigiPlus Interactive Corp. and World Platinum Technologies Inc., was officially launched last August 7 in Taguig City.
From the outset, the PlaySafe Alliance of the Philippines aims to promote responsible gaming, ensure strict regulatory compliance, protect consumers, and combat illegal gambling—which reportedly accounts for 70 percent of the country’s online gaming market. The collective’s commitment to these goals comes at a time when lawmakers, regulators, and business leaders are reviewing how to balance public welfare with the economic benefits of the online gambling industry.
Combating illegal gambling and enhancing regulation
“The real enemy when it comes to online gambling is the illegal market. No license, no regulation—minors can play, no taxes are paid, and rules are not followed. Instead of being protected, the public is put at risk,” said Mike Defensor, spokesperson for the alliance and president of World Platinum Technologies Inc. He stressed that strict regulation and close monitoring of legal operators are essential for safe, responsible, and fair gaming.
According to sources, the PlaySafe Alliance of the Philippines plans to collaborate closely with the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation to improve industry oversight and compliance, particularly in marketing and advertising practices. The alliance also seeks to strengthen “Know-Your-Customer” processes, including rigorous age verification and self-exclusion programs, to protect players from harm.
Initiatives to protect players and deter illegal operators
Beyond regulation, the alliance intends to implement initiatives that discourage illegal online gaming operations. These efforts include onboarding an independent advisory panel made up of local and international experts to provide guidance and accountability.
Consumer education is another key focus. The PlaySafe Alliance will invest in nationwide research, education, prevention, and treatment (REPT) programs targeting online gambling-related issues. Among these programs is a 24/7 National Gambling Helpline that will provide continuous support to those affected.
By uniting as one, the alliance believes it can make online gambling in the Philippines more secure, transparent, and beneficial for both players and the country as a whole.
