Liquor ban violators arrested in Ormoc City
At least 12 people were arrested in Ormoc City, Leyte, for violating the liquor ban a day before the National and Local Elections. Authorities apprehended nine individuals Sunday morning in Barangay Doña Feliza Z. Mejia after they were caught drinking beer.
Meanwhile, three others were detained in Barangay San Antonio for consuming liquor in a public area. These arrests highlight the strict enforcement of the liquor ban ahead of the May 12 elections.
Understanding the liquor ban and election rules
The Commission on Elections (Comelec) issued Resolution No. 11057, which prohibits selling, giving, offering, or buying liquor starting from May 11 until the end of Election Day. Anyone caught violating this rule can face imprisonment for up to six years.
Alongside the liquor ban, the mandatory campaign silence period began on May 11, stopping all forms of campaigning nationwide. These measures aim to ensure a peaceful and orderly election process.
Election day schedule and special accommodations
Election Day falls on Monday, May 12. Polling precincts will open early at 5 a.m. to accommodate senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and pregnant registered voters, allowing them to vote until 7 a.m.
Regular voting hours will then run from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Voters are encouraged to follow these guidelines to help maintain order and safety during the elections.
