Government Provides Livelihood Assistance to Woman Found in Sewer
A woman recently discovered living in a sewer in Makati City will receive P80,000 in livelihood assistance to start a sari-sari store, local sources confirm. This aid is part of the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s efforts to help vulnerable citizens regain stability.
Authorities met with Rose, the woman in question, at a government center in Pasay City to assess her needs and offer support. She shared her aspiration to own a sari-sari store, a small neighborhood convenience shop common in the Philippines. Based on evaluations by social workers, officials agree she has the capacity to manage such a business.
“Our intervention for Rose will be to help her achieve her dream of owning a store, and based on our social worker’s assessment, she is capable of managing it,” said a government representative familiar with the case.
Support Extends to Rose’s Partner and Community Outreach
In addition to assisting Rose, the government plans to help her partner, Jerome, who has skills in welding. Efforts are underway to provide training opportunities and possibly funding for a welding machine to help stabilize their income.
“Her partner, Jerome, will also be referred to us for possible training since he is skilled in welding. We may assist them in acquiring a welding machine to help make their income more stable,” the official added.
During their meeting, Rose expressed willingness to assist government outreach efforts. She plans to encourage others living in similar difficult circumstances to seek help at the Pag-abot Center, a facility established in 2023 to provide temporary shelter and support for street dwellers.
Pag-abot Center’s Role in Rebuilding Lives
Since its inception, the Pag-abot Center has served as a refuge for families and individuals experiencing homelessness. It offers a pathway to recovery by connecting them with programs aimed at helping them rebuild their lives in their hometowns.
“She will help us convince others living on the streets to come to the shelter and receive assistance,” community leaders said. Prior to receiving assistance, Rose and Jerome had been living on the streets near Pasong Tamo in Makati City for about a year before renting a small space.
This story highlights the importance of livelihood assistance for vulnerable populations and the collaborative efforts needed to uplift those in dire situations. By providing opportunities and training, the government hopes to foster self-sufficiency and long-term stability among marginalized groups.
