Liza Soberano’s Childhood Trauma Sparks Call for Stronger Action

Liza Soberano’s Childhood Trauma Ignites Awareness

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has praised actress Liza Soberano for her courageous decision to reveal her childhood trauma online. Officials emphasized the importance of addressing child abuse with greater urgency, highlighting Soberano’s openness as a powerful example.

DSWD and the Council for the Welfare of Children (CWC) expressed gratitude to Soberano for encouraging other victims of abuse to break their silence. “Speaking up about one’s past is never easy, especially for children who have gone through painful and traumatic experiences. It’s like revisiting wounds that haven’t fully healed. That’s why we deeply respect and value those who come forward despite the difficulty,” said Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao in a recent statement.

Opening Conversations on Child Abuse

“Their stories help open important conversations so that these experiences no longer define the lives of future generations of children,” Dumlao added. Community leaders noted that Soberano’s testimony sheds light on the harsh realities many Filipino children face, growing up in environments filled with trauma and instability.

According to the CWC, the actress’s story “reflects the painful reality that many Filipino children continue to face — growing up in environments that expose them to trauma, instability, and harm from those who are meant to nurture them.”

Details of Abuse Shared in Podcast

In a podcast episode titled “Can I Come In?” released on August 15, Soberano revealed she endured abuse from her mother’s former boyfriend and a foster parent while living in the United States. Her candid confession has sparked widespread support and renewed calls for stronger protective measures for children.

On Instagram, Soberano thanked those who supported her. She addressed her younger self, saying, “To four-year-old Hope, who’s in the midst of a painful, upside down world, just trying to stay a child, thank you. I know you must be wondering why I’m sharing our story, why now, and why this?”

DSWD Urges Public to Use Child Abuse Helpline

In response to the renewed attention on child abuse, the DSWD reminded the public about the MAKABATA Helpline 1383, which operates 24/7 for urgent concerns regarding child abuse, neglect, and discrimination. The hotline is accessible via landline at 1383 and on mobile through Smart at 0919-354-1383 and Globe at 0915-802-2375.

Officials also encouraged the public to reach out through social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram or report incidents through the e-Gov Super App by selecting “child abuse.”

By sharing her story, Liza Soberano has not only highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by many children but also inspired a movement toward stronger protection and support systems for vulnerable youth.
