Local Leaders Push for Ceasefire in Moro MILF Conflict
COTABATO CITY — Local leaders in Pagalungan, Maguindanao del Sur have successfully brokered a ceasefire between warring Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) factions. This agreement aims to halt hostilities that have long troubled the community.
Mayor Abdullah Mamasabulod, a key figure in the peace efforts, shared that the two MILF groups, entangled in a longstanding rido or family feud, agreed to the ceasefire after discussions facilitated by the local government, military officials, and Muslim religious leaders. “They all agreed to a ceasefire effective today, Thursday, and to help affected civilians return to their respective communities,” Mamasabulod stated.
Resolving the MILF Conflict
The dispute involves Datu Teng Matalam, a former village chair of Kilangan and an MILF official, and a faction led by Ustadz Norodin, also affiliated with the MILF. The ongoing fighting has displaced numerous civilians, prompting urgent intervention.
The 40th Infantry Battalion of the Army warned the factions that any failure to uphold the localized peace accord would compel the military to take action to protect civilians. “If they don’t cease fighting, then the military will become their enemies as it is ready to conduct offensive against hardheaded MILF members,” the mayor cautioned.
Support for Affected Communities
Meanwhile, the local social welfare office has extended assistance to those displaced by the conflict. Emergency food supplies have been distributed to ensure the basic needs of the affected families are met while peace is restored.
This ceasefire marks a hopeful step toward ending the Moro MILF conflict within the area. Local leaders remain committed to sustaining peace and ensuring the safety of all community members.
