Iconic Love Bus Revival Launches in Cebu
The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has officially relaunched the iconic Love Bus in Cebu, offering free rides to the public. This revival aims to ease the daily commute for thousands of passengers traveling between Talisay City, Anjo World, and Cebu City.
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon announced that 11 Love Buses are now operating on this route, providing service from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and again from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Starting this Friday, commuters can enjoy these complimentary rides during peak hours.
Significant Benefits for Commuters and Operators
Officials reported that approximately 2,462 commuters, along with 44 operators and drivers, will benefit daily from the Love Bus program. This initiative is designed to support workers and students who rely on affordable, efficient transportation.
“The President wanted to revive Love Bus and make it better. It’s now free. The President said we must do it for the entire country, and it is symbolic that we are launching it in Visayas and Mindanao. The program is worth it because it is a direct benefit for the passengers,” Dizon said in an official statement.
Fare Reduction Eases Financial Burden
Before the revival, passengers paid a fare of P30 one-way, totaling P60 daily for a round trip. Community members expressed how this free service significantly reduces their transportation expenses.
“We talked to passengers. They said that before it was made free, their fare was P30 one-way, so P60 for the day. This is a big deal for our workers [and] students,” Dizon added, emphasizing the program’s positive impact.
Support from Government Officials
Alongside Secretary Dizon, Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman and Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco participated in the Love Bus relaunch in Cebu. Their collaboration highlights the government’s commitment to improving public transportation.
The Legacy of the Love Bus
The Love Bus first gained fame in the 1970s as the Philippines’ pioneering air-conditioned bus. It was reportedly a project initiated by then-First Lady Imelda Marcos, contributing to the country’s transportation history.
With its revival, the Love Bus symbolizes a renewed focus on accessible and comfortable public transit for Filipinos, starting in the Visayas and Mindanao regions before expanding nationwide.
