Low Pressure Area and Southwest Monsoon Expected to Cause Heavy Rainfall
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) has warned that the Low Pressure Area and southwest monsoon will bring persistent and widespread rainfall across multiple Philippine regions in the coming days. Residents in affected areas should prepare for continuous rain that may cause flooding and landslides.
As of 3:00 p.m. on June 7, PAGASA reported the Low Pressure Area was about 175 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes. This weather disturbance is forecasted to bring scattered rain showers and thunderstorms mainly over the Bicol Region, Central and Eastern Visayas, Aurora, and Quezon provinces. Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon will affect Metro Manila, MIMAROPA, Mindanao, other parts of Central Luzon, and Visayas, delivering moderate to heavy rainfall.
Rainfall Forecast and Areas at Risk
PAGASA expects rainfall amounts ranging from 50 to 200 millimeters between June 7 and 10. The prolonged wet weather increases the risk of flooding in low-lying areas and landslides in mountainous zones. Local leaders noted that runoff from previous rains may worsen flood conditions in elevated locations.
The forecast for rainfall due to the Low Pressure Area is as follows:
- June 7–8: Quezon, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, Northern Samar, and Eastern Samar (50–100 mm)
- June 8–9: Quezon, Camarines Norte and Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate, Northern Samar (50–100 mm)
- June 9–10: Camarines Norte and Sur, Catanduanes, Albay, Sorsogon, Masbate (50–100 mm)
For the southwest monsoon, rainfall projections include:
- June 7–8: 50–100 mm over Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, Laguna, Occidental Mindoro, Palawan, Antique, Iloilo, Negros Occidental, and Zamboanga del Norte
- June 8–9: 100–200 mm in Palawan, Occidental Mindoro, Antique; 50–100 mm in Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, Iloilo, Guimaras, Negros Occidental and Oriental, and Zamboanga del Norte
- June 9–10: 100–200 mm in Palawan, Occidental Mindoro, Antique; 50–100 mm in Zambales, Tarlac, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, Negros Occidental, and Zamboanga del Norte
Public Advisory and Preparedness
Authorities urge residents in vulnerable areas to stay alert and take safety precautions to protect lives and property. PAGASA’s regional offices may issue localized advisories, such as Heavy Rainfall Alerts and Thunderstorm Advisories, to keep the public informed of changing weather conditions.
Community members should monitor official weather updates and coordinate with local disaster risk reduction and management offices for instructions. Precautionary measures are vital as the combined effects of the Low Pressure Area and southwest monsoon increase the threat of flash floods and landslides.
