Low-Pressure Area Nears Philippine Landmass
MANILA — A low-pressure area (LPA) outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) shows signs of developing into a tropical depression as it approaches the country, officials reported. This low-pressure area has the potential to impact the Philippines in the coming days, local meteorological sources noted.
According to weather specialists, the LPA was last observed about 1,150 kilometers east of Eastern Visayas, still outside the PAR. However, community members monitoring the weather said it is expected to enter the PAR within hours, possibly by the morning.
Possible Tropical Depression Formation and Naming
Experts explained, “It is still outside our area of responsibility, but in the next 3 hours or this morning, we expect it to enter the PAR.” The LPA might develop into a tropical depression before it crosses Northern Luzon on Friday, officials reported.
If the low-pressure area enters the PAR and strengthens into a tropical depression, it will be assigned the local name “Isang,” becoming the ninth cyclone to affect the country this season. Local leaders emphasized the importance of preparedness given this forecast.
Weather authorities outlined two scenarios for the LPA’s development: it could either form into a tropical depression before reaching the landmass or develop after crossing the country. At present, the LPA has no direct effect on any region within the Philippines.
Wednesday Weather Forecast Across Regions
Meanwhile, the easterlies wind pattern is expected to bring rain showers to parts of Luzon and Visayas, while the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) will influence weather conditions in Mindanao this Wednesday.
Community weather observers reported cloudy skies with a high chance of rain and thunderstorms in Catanduanes, Albay, and Sorsogon due to the easterlies—warm winds coming from the Pacific Ocean.
Metro Manila and other areas in Luzon may experience localized thunderstorms, mainly in the afternoon and evening, also driven by the easterlies. Northern and Eastern Samar are forecasted to have cloudy skies with frequent rain showers as well.
In the Visayas region, localized thunderstorms are likely during the afternoon and evening, courtesy of the easterlies, officials noted. Meanwhile, the ITCZ, described as the convergence line where winds from the northern and southern hemispheres meet, is expected to bring cloudy skies and a high chance of rain over Palawan.
Mindanao will see partly cloudy to cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms possible throughout the day due to the ITCZ, community members said.
