Low-Pressure Area Gains Strength Over Philippines
A low-pressure area inside the Philippine area of responsibility is expected to intensify and spread rain across more regions, local weather authorities reported on Sunday. The low-pressure area poses a high chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours.
Weather specialist Veronica Torres shared in a 5 p.m. advisory that the low-pressure area was located approximately 430 kilometers east-northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur as of 3 p.m. “Whether it becomes a tropical depression or not, more areas will experience more rains as it approaches the landmass,” she said in Filipino.
Current Weather Conditions and Affected Areas
Officials noted that the low-pressure area is already causing cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms across Visayas, Bicol Region, Northern Mindanao, Caraga, Davao Region, and Quezon Province. Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon, locally known as habagat, is contributing to similar weather patterns in Soccsksargen, Zamboanga Peninsula, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, and Palawan.
Torres also forecasted widespread rainy weather for Monday. “Rainy weather is also expected in Bicol Region, Calabarzon [Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon], Mimaropa [Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and Palawan]. For the rest of Luzon, expect partly cloudy to cloudy skies with chances of localized thunderstorms,” she added.
