Low-Pressure Area East Luzon May Develop Into Tropical Depression
A low-pressure area east of extreme Northern Luzon has a high chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours, sources said. As of early Thursday, this weather disturbance was located 235 kilometers east of Calayan, Cagayan, moving north-northwestward while showing signs of intensification.
Meteorological experts noted that if the system intensifies into a tropical depression within the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR), it will be named “Auring.” The disturbance is moving relatively fast and may approach Taiwan after strengthening. However, it could also weaken or exit the PAR within 48 hours.
Expected Weather Impact Across Northern Luzon and Nearby Regions
Regardless of its development into a tropical cyclone, the low-pressure area is expected to bring significant rainfall over extreme Northern Luzon, especially in Batanes and Cagayan. Meanwhile, the southwest monsoon, locally known as “habagat,” will continue to deliver moderate to heavy rains in provinces such as Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro over the next day.
Light to occasional heavy monsoon rains are expected in Metro Manila, La Union, Benguet, Tarlac, Pampanga, Bulacan, Cavite, Batangas, Palawan, and Antique. The rest of Luzon, Visayas, as well as the Zamboanga Peninsula, Dinagat Islands, and Surigao del Norte, will have cloudy skies with scattered showers and thunderstorms.
Weather Outlook for Mindanao and Precautionary Advisories
Mindanao will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or localized thunderstorms. Authorities advise the public to stay alert for possible localized flooding, especially in urban, low-lying, and river-adjacent areas. Landslides may also occur in locations that are highly susceptible.
Residents are urged to monitor weather updates and prepare accordingly as the low-pressure area east Luzon continues to evolve.
