MANILA, Philippines — The low-pressure area inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility is set to bring widespread rains across Luzon, while the southwest monsoon, locally called the habagat, influences the Visayas and Mindanao, sources said.
According to weather experts, the low-pressure area inside PAR was last spotted 390 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora. It is expected to cause continuous rain over regions including Cagayan Valley, the Cordillera Administrative Region, and Aurora. Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon will see cloudy skies with scattered showers due to this weather system.
Forecast and Possible Intensification
Though the low-pressure area inside PAR currently has a low chance of developing into a tropical cyclone, it will likely maintain steady rain showers, especially as it moves over land later Thursday evening or Friday. “We are also not ruling out the possibility that this could become a full-fledged tropical cyclone over the West Philippine Sea,” a local meteorologist said in Filipino.
The southwest monsoon continues to affect Palawan, the Visayas, and parts of Mindanao. Palawan and Visayas will experience rainy weather because of the habagat. Meanwhile, most of Mindanao will have rain, except for the Soccsksargen and Davao regions, which are expected to have fair weather with occasional rain in the afternoon and evening.
Monitoring Low-Pressure Area Outside PAR
Aside from the LPA inside PAR, another low-pressure area outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility is being closely watched. This second LPA was last located 2,815 kilometers east of Northern Luzon. Experts note it currently has a medium chance of evolving into a tropical cyclone within the next day, with its likelihood increasing in the following days. “We are also not ruling out the possibility that it will enter our [PAR],” a weather specialist explained.
The LPA outside PAR does not currently affect any part of the country.
