Low-pressure area to bring heavy rains in northern Luzon
MANILA, Philippines — The northern parts of Luzon are bracing for increased rainfall as a low-pressure area (LPA) moves close to the landmass, local weather authorities said Wednesday. This low-pressure area has a high chance of developing into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours.
“The system, located about 155 kilometers east of Tuguegarao City, Cagayan, is causing intensified rain in northern Luzon due to its proximity,” a weather specialist explained in Filipino during the 5 p.m. forecast. The keyphrase low-pressure area is likely appears early to emphasize the developing weather condition.
Possible Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal #1 in Luzon
Authorities also warned that Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal #1 might be raised in the eastern parts of northern and Central Luzon if the LPA continues to approach the area. The weather specialist outlined two possible paths for the system’s movement.
“The first scenario involves the LPA crossing Calayan Island before heading towards southern Japan. Alternatively, it may move northward without crossing Calayan, but still aim for southern Japan,” he added.
Expected Heavy Rainfall and Flood Risks
From Wednesday through Thursday afternoon, the LPA is forecasted to bring 50 to 100 millimeters of rain in several areas, including Batanes, Cagayan, Isabela, Apayao, Kalinga, Abra, Ilocos Norte, Pangasinan, Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro. Residents in low-lying and coastal regions should remain alert due to possible flooding, while landslides may occur in vulnerable zones.
Weather Outlook for Other Regions
Meanwhile, scattered rain showers and thunderstorms are expected across Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon. Occasional rains are also forecasted in Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro. In contrast, the eastern and western areas of Visayas and Mindanao may enjoy mostly clear skies with some chance of localized thunderstorms.
