Low Pressure Area May Become First Cyclone
The low pressure area (LPA) being closely tracked with a high chance of developing into a tropical depression may soon enter the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR). This weather system could become the country’s first cyclone this August, sources said.
According to the latest forecast, the LPA is currently located 1,060 kilometers east-northeast of the northernmost part of Luzon, still outside the PAR. “Malayo pa ito sa ating lupain, pero ito ay nasa hangganan o malapit na sa ating saklaw,” a local weather specialist explained in Filipino.
The expert added that the LPA is likely to intensify into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours. “Posible itong pansamantalang pumasok sa PAR at pagkatapos ay lalabas muli papuntang hilagang-silangan,” she said.
Potential Impact and Naming
If the LPA strengthens into a cyclone and moves into Philippine territory, it will be named “Fabian.” This would make it the first cyclone of August and the sixth for the year 2025.
Currently, the LPA does not directly affect any part of the country. However, it may enhance the southwest monsoon, locally called the habagat, which can bring increased rainfall to affected areas.
Southwest Monsoon Effects Across Luzon and Beyond
The habagat is expected to bring cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms to several parts of Luzon. These include the Ilocos Region, Abra, Benguet, Batanes, Babuyan Islands, and Zambales.
Meanwhile, other parts of Luzon, including Metro Manila, will experience generally improved weather. However, occasional localized thunderstorms may still cause brief downpours.
Palawan and the Visayas regions will see partly cloudy to cloudy skies with a chance of thunderstorms at any time due to the habagat. Mindanao, on the other hand, will have partly cloudy to cloudy conditions with possible thunderstorms caused by localized weather disturbances.
