LTFRB Takes Action After Jeepney Accident in Cainta
The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has issued a show cause order to a Rizal-based transport cooperative following a collision involving one of its public utility jeepneys (PUJs) that injured seven people. This incident took place in Cainta, prompting the regulatory body to demand accountability from the operator.
The exact four word keyphrase, “show cause order issued,” became central as LTFRB Regional Office IV-A directed the Tanay Binangonan Cainta Sta. Lucia Transport Cooperative to explain why its Certificate of Public Convenience (CPC) should not be suspended, revoked, or canceled. The cooperative allegedly allowed a reckless and unfit driver to operate the jeepney involved in the accident.
Details of the Incident and LTFRB’s Response
According to reports, CCTV footage showed the jeepney with plate number DVR 757 crashing into two multi-purpose vans and a motorcycle on Felix Avenue in Cainta at around 8 a.m. on May 28. Seven individuals sustained injuries in the collision.
In response, LTFRB Chairperson emphasized the importance of road safety and announced that the operator has been summoned for a hearing scheduled on June 6 at 2 p.m. at the LTFRB IV-A office in Lipa City, Batangas. The operator was also required to submit a written explanation to justify why their franchise should remain valid despite the incident.
Operator Responsibility and Regulatory Enforcement
The LTFRB stressed that transport operators have both legal and moral duties to carefully screen and supervise their drivers. The chairperson warned, “Operators must ensure that their drivers are qualified, disciplined, and trained to protect, not endanger, the public.”
This move aligns with the Department of Transportation’s broader drive to strengthen safety standards and restore public confidence in public transportation by strictly enforcing regulations and holding violators accountable.
Ongoing Investigation and Support for Victims
Authorities are working closely with local officials to continue investigating the incident. Efforts are underway to provide necessary assistance to those injured in the crash.
The LTFRB also highlighted that this case should serve as a clear warning to all public transport operators: failure to comply with traffic laws will lead to serious consequences.
