LTO Extends Use of Temporary Plate to Curb Unregistered Vehicles
MANILA, Philippines — The Land Transportation Office (LTO) intensified efforts against unregistered vehicles, apprehending a total of 20,307 units nationwide in June 2025. The agency’s move to extend the use of temporary plate aims to improve compliance and road safety.
Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II, head of the LTO, disclosed that most of the vehicles caught without registration were motorcycles, totaling 12,808, followed by 3,992 tricycles. This crackdown forms part of the LTO’s ongoing campaign to ensure all vehicles on the road have updated registration.
Vehicle Types and Regional Apprehensions
Aside from motorcycles and tricycles, authorities also apprehended 1,852 vans—including 29 public utility vehicles—850 private sedans, 544 trucks, 47 passenger jeepneys, and 10 buses during the month. This highlights the broad scope of unregistered vehicles still operating across the country.
Calabarzon remains the hotspot for unregistered vehicle apprehensions, recording 10,516 cases in June, slightly higher than May’s 9,906. Following Calabarzon are the Mimaropa region with 2,925 apprehensions and the Cagayan Valley region with 2,591, according to sources familiar with the data.
Stricter Penalties and Impoundment Policies
Mendoza warned vehicle owners who neglect registration that penalties will become more severe. Starting August 2025, aside from the automatic P10,000 fine, unregistered vehicles will be impounded until they pass the roadworthiness inspection.
“The unregistered motor vehicles will be impounded until such time that they pass the roadworthiness inspection. We have to do this in the interest of greater number of road users,” Mendoza emphasized, signaling a tougher stance to enhance road safety nationwide.
The LTO’s extension of the use of temporary plate offers some relief to motorists awaiting registration processing. However, the agency remains firm in its crackdown on unregistered vehicles to reduce road accidents and enforce traffic laws effectively.
