LTO Flags Vehicle Using Unauthorized Rear-Mounted Light Bar

LTO Flags Vehicle for Hazardous Unauthorized Light Bar

The Land Transportation Office (LTO) recently flagged a Toyota FJ Cruiser that went viral on social media for having an unauthorized rear-mounted light bar. Officials expressed concern that this modification poses serious safety risks to other drivers, especially during nighttime.

LTO chief Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II confirmed that a show-cause order has been issued to the vehicle’s registered owner. This action follows widespread public concern about the glaring rear lights, which can impair the vision of motorists following behind.

“We don’t know what was going through the mind of the vehicle owner when they decided to install such a glaring light. That’s prohibited because it can compromise road safety, especially at night,” Mendoza said in Filipino, referring to the Toyota FJ Cruiser in the viral video. He also mentioned, “He was also advised to surrender the license of the driver using the car at the time of the incident.”

Legal Orders and Possible Charges Explained

The LTO has formally ordered both the registered owner and the driver to explain why they should not face administrative charges. These violations include breaches of Presidential Decree No. 96, Joint Administrative Order No. 2014-01, and Republic Act No. 4136, particularly concerning reckless driving under Section 48. Additionally, they may be classified as an Improper Person to Operate a Motor Vehicle under Section 27(a).

Authorities have also instructed the parties involved to bring the vehicle, along with its original certificate of registration and official receipt, for further inspection. Mendoza warned, “Failure to appear and submit the written comment/explanation as required shall be construed by this Office as a waiver of your right to be heard, and the case shall be decided based on the evidence at hand.”

Safety Concerns Behind Rear-Mounted Light Bars

The LTO’s investigation revealed that the bright rear-mounted light bars caused several motorists to brake suddenly due to the blinding glare. This reaction increases the risk of accidents, further emphasizing why such modifications are prohibited.

The agency’s swift response highlights its commitment to road safety and strict enforcement against modifications that endanger the public. Local sources noted that this incident serves as a warning to vehicle owners to comply with regulations and prioritize safety.
