The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has issued a show cause order to the driver and registered owner of the trailer truck involved in a fatal collision with multiple vehicles in Marikina City on Thursday.
According to LTO chief Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II, this marks the beginning of the investigation, where the driver and registered owner are expected to provide their account of the events.
Mendoza stated, “We are seeking to understand what occurred and determine if the registered owner was negligent in maintaining the truck and if the driver was fit to operate the vehicle at the time of the accident.”
A report from the Marikina Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) indicated that the incident occurred at 10 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23, along Fortune Avenue, where the trailer truck was involved in a collision with several vehicles, including two passenger jeepneys, two cars, and one SUV, after experiencing a mishap.
The accident resulted in the loss of three lives and injured 10 others in the six-vehicle pileup.
The driver of the trailer truck is currently in the custody of the Marikina City Police and faces charges of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide and multiple injury, as well as damage to property.
Mendoza noted that the truck driver will be required to explain why they should not be penalized for reckless driving and why their license should not be revoked.
The investigation also aims to determine if the truck was properly maintained, and LTO investigators will examine the possibility of overloading.
The driver’s license has been suspended, and the truck has been placed under alarm, according to the agency.
Local government personnel conducted a cleanup operation to restore the road to a passable condition for motorists after the accident.
