LTO Revokes License of Truck Driver
The Land Transportation Office (LTO) has officially revoked the license of the truck driver involved in a fatal accident on the Batasan – San Mateo Road in Quezon City last month. The crash tragically claimed three lives and left several others injured. LTO chief Assistant Secretary Vigor D. Mendoza II confirmed that the driver tested positive for illegal drug use during a mandatory drug screening.
“Aside from the revocation, the truck driver was also perpetually disqualified from being granted a driver’s license,” Mendoza emphasized. This decisive action reflects the LTO’s commitment to road safety and strict enforcement of traffic laws.
Legal Basis for License Revocation
In a detailed three-page decision signed by Mendoza, the license cancellation was grounded on existing laws empowering the LTO to revoke driving privileges for motorists caught under the influence of drugs or alcohol. The document highlighted the responsibilities that come with holding a driver’s license.
“The Land Transportation Office issues a driver’s license to a person who possesses not only the skills to drive but also a strong sense of responsibility and commitment to obey traffic laws, rules and regulations,” the decision stated. It further noted that drivers must respect other motorists and pedestrians and avoid actions that endanger lives and public safety.
Details of the Incident
According to initial reports, the truck driver claimed that the vehicle’s brakes failed while he was traveling on the Batasan – San Mateo Road on May 28. Unable to control the steering wheel, the truck’s trailer toppled onto the center island, causing the truck to ram into several vehicles.
Although the driver tested negative for alcohol consumption, the mandatory drug test revealed positive results for illegal substances, specifically shabu. This finding confirmed the driver’s impairment at the time of the accident.
Strong Warning Against Illegal Drug Use
Mendoza urged the public to take this incident as a stern warning. “The use of illegal drugs and even drunk driving will never be tolerated and will be faced with serious consequences,” he said.
He also reminded everyone that a driver’s license is a privilege, not a right. “It can be revoked anytime if a person defies all expectations to be a responsible and disciplined driver,” Mendoza added.
This case highlights the LTO’s firm stance on road safety and the importance of responsible driving. Authorities continue to monitor and enforce laws to prevent such tragic accidents in the future.
